Our anniversary

Between 3 and 4 November 2006 our Society celebrated the twenty-fifth anniversary of its activity. The Society was registered in Wroclaw on 2 November 1981, and the first hostel was opened on Christmas Eve of 1981 in a barrack at 103 Lotnicza Street. Brother Jerzy Marszalkowicz lived there with 11 homeless people as their carer. The Caritas did not act at that time, suspended by government in 1950 and our Society was the only independent charity. Its idea was spreading and the circles in Warsaw, Lublin, Poznań, Kielce were created.

Health of the homeless

The 13 of October 2006 an annual FEANTSA conference “The right to health the right of man. Ensuring access to health for the homeless,” took place in Wroclaw. 290 people from 31 countries, representing 90 organizations participated in it. FEANTSA is a European federation consisting of over 90 national organizations helping the homeless from all EU countries. A yearly thematic conference is a summary and presentation of the results of annual work concerning a chosen aspect of homelessness.
Due to the 25-year anniversary of our Society, Wroclaw was chosen a place of this year’s conference. The conference was held under the patronage of the Prime Minister of Poland, the Minister of Health  and the President of Wroclaw. In the conference there also participated the Vice Minister of the Ministry of Health, Marek Grabowski, and the representative of European Commission, Hugues Feltesse.

The tenth anniversary of the Circle in Pleszew

This year the Pleszew Circle of our Society celebrates a jubilee of its ten-year activity. The celebration of the anniversary on 29th September was combined with laying the foundation stone to mark the founding of a chapel attached to the Hostel. The prelate Henryk Szymiec blessed the foundation act.

Bronze medal for the homeless

On Sunday, 30 September,  the IV Homeless World Cup in Cape Town (Republic of South Africa) finished. The cup was won by the Russian team that beat Kazakhstan in the final. Polish team took the third place.

A football tournament

From 22nd to 24th September 2006 in Gorzow’s Stilon hall took place the VI Indoor Football Society Championships, in which 7 teams, consisting of the occupants and carers of institutions participated. The teams were entered by the circles of Gdansk, Gorzow, Inowroclaw, Miechow, Przemysl, Slupsk and Wroclaw. This year’s Chairman of the Society’s Cup went to Miechow, Wroclaw took the second place and Gdansk – the third place. The team from Miechów appeared a dark horse of the tournament – it won the competition despite participating in it for the first time and one of its contestants appeared also the best scorer. The tournament was organized by the Gorzow Circle.

 
A jubilee in Sanok

On Sunday, 24 September, the Sanok Circle of our Society celebrated the fifteenth anniversary of its activity. A celebration started with a camp service celebrated by the prelate Michal Drabicki, founder of the Circle, near the Disabled Homeless House. Then there was a dinner, a meeting at the eating place and a performance by the pupils from music school. In the celebration took part the mayor of Sanok, Mr. Wojciech Blecharczyk, numerous members of the circle, guests from neighbouring circles and the Chairman of the Society, Bohdan Aniszczyk. The Sanok Circle is one of the biggest circles of the Society – it runs the Disabled Homeless House, Social Aid Centre, a soup kitchen, a bath house, a clothes distribution centre and Motivation Centre for the homeless. For some years the circle is also undertaking a great task – a major renovation and conversion of a great building into a hospice. From the beginning the leader of the circle is Mrs.Wanda Wojtuszewska supported by a group of regular volunteers.

 
The fruitful five years

St.Brother Albert’s hostel for men in Jelenia Gora has been acting for 5 years. An institution was established in August 2001 in the building of a former kindergarten at 51 Grunwaldzka St. There are 78 places but in the winter even 120-130 people stay there. The hostel also helps the poor from the city by giving dinners and clothes.

According to the consulate, there may be even 3 thousand of homeless Poles in Great Britain. Today’s Polish daily “Rzeczpospolita” publishes the article by Wojciech Lorenz “Emigrants on the British street.” We recommend it.

 
20 lat albertyńskiej posługi

W niedzielę 10 września 2006 r Schronisko św. Br. Alberta w Bychawie obchodziło 20-lecie działalności. Przez 20 lat znalazło tu swój dom 1905 starszych i chorych kobiet, którym rodzina nie mogła lub nie chciała zapewnić opieki. 3 siostry albertynki i 4 osoby świeckie zapewniają pełną opiekę i rodzinny klimat 30 pensjonariuszkom. Pod bokiem jest kościół i księża często odwiedzają mieszkanki. Od 15 lat placówką kieruje z wielkim poświęceniem i energią s. Klaudiana – Henryka Pastuszko. Widać tu rękę dobrego gospodarza - nie tylko mieszkanki ale i obiekt jest czysty i zadbany.
